It's tough to organize oneself into a neat and tidy schedule without being boring and without the excitement of doing things off the cuff. The thrill of being spontaneous, or at least partly so, has rendered my life here as one that is very uncomfortably NOT routine.
As much as yours truly tries to settle into a routine, the unexpected has made it a habit to ambush me with energy-sapping weekend trips or news of another weekday team dinner (synonymous with elements involving the eventual intoxication of my body). The result is a very irregular rise-n-shine time; even more uncertain is the 6- 7.30pm period in which I'm supposed to pack up and leave the office. I am just not seeing the 5pm SHARP end to working hours, as observed in most cultures in the west.
Meh, and so the feeble efforts to fit bits of my day into a timetable has failed quite miserably and no foreseeable endeavor into a sustained attempt is in sight.
These are the gory details of what usually bothers me or runs through my head as the short term, 5-hours ahead planning goes into full gear:
- laundry (endless and unrelenting)
- ironing (same as the above, but without the convenience of throwing a bunch into a machine to do it for you)
- Gym (This WAS pretty much in the thick of it in January, February, but has now become more of an elusive target these days)
- Food. "Hmm... what's for dinner. Should I cook? If so, is boring ol' spaghetti good enough or do I want to risk using one full hour to whip up a dish that tastes awfully like rubber?"
- Weekend. Needless to say, it's undoubtedly the highlight of my week. Be it to travel, party or just lie-in, all are welcomed with open arms.
- Study (Korean Language)
All this fuss over time management may seem uncalled for... but when you only have 31 weekends left to explore as much of this exotic land as possible, resting on your laurels is very much accepted as one of the biggest sins in this overworked traveller's book.
